Justice & Peace/
Children's Advocacy Committee

This Justice & Peace/Children's Advocacy Committee page is designed as a resource to help Episcopal congregations, groups, and individuals in the Diocese of Northern Michigan, explore ways they can use their gifts in collaboration with others (locally and worldwide), to be advocates for justice and peace in the name of Christ.

We share in the vision of Jubilee 2000, which seeks the transformation of God’s creation through peaceful cooperation of all Christians (indeed, all persons of goodwill) as we bear witness to our Baptismal Covenant in our homes, workplaces, and neighborhoods. Our mission is to build a just and peaceful global community. Our challenge, as Steven Charleston reminds us in his comments on Jubilee 2000, "will be to cross the old frontiers of our own prejudice to find new partners in building a just and peaceful global community." This webpage is one vital way of living into our vision and mission in this diocese of building a just and peaceful global community.

ACTIVITIES OF THE CHILDREN'S ADVOCACY COMMITTEE:

Support St. Michael's Primary School in South Africa

St. Michael's Primary School in Khayelitsha, South Africa is working hard to make the dream of going to school a reality for impoverished children in their community. For many children in Khayelitsha, St. Michael's Primary School has provided a vital opportunity for a brighter future.

Your generosity in the past has helped many children attend school. In an area in which unempolyment rates hover at 70%, the majority of parents in Khayelitsha, despite their desire to send thier children to school, are often unable to pay the govenment mandated fee for schooling. As a result, the students of St. Michael's depend upon scholarships made possible by your generosity.

A scholarship fund was begun by Margaret Sottile in 2001 to aid in the mission of St. Michael's Church to establish St. Michael's Primary School. It is this fund that offers us an opportunity to help the children of Khayelitsha. Now the Children's Advocacy/Peace and Justice Committee is continuing work of Margaret Sottile to raise money for the Nothern Michigan Scholarship Fund at St. Michael's Primary School.

Please support St. Michael's by sponsoring a scholarship as you have in past years by donating to the Scholarship Fund. $70 dollars per scholarship is an amazingly small amount of money for a year of schooling. Over the past three years we have sent over $3600 to support St. Michael's Primary School. The smiling faces of the children who are provided a quality education by your support, are worth more than any of us could possibly imagine.

Please contribute by sending a check payable to: The Episcopal Diocese of Northern Michigan (in the memo line write St. Michael's Primary School), 131 East Ridge Street, Marquette, MI 49855.

Please send donations in by March 1, 2006. Thank you in advance for your gift.

Rayford
